In May 2014, the U.S. Department of Justice (USDOJ) announced indictments against five Chinese military officials, accusing them of hacking and economic espionage operations. The charges allege that as officers in Unit 61398 of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) they targeted organizations in the U.S. nuclear power, metals and solar products industries, known as APT 1. At the time, these indictments represented the first ever charges against known state actors for infiltrating U.S. commercial targets by cyber means. Although the indictments received worldwide attention, not many people have heard the actual, behind the scenes stories of how these cyber incidents unfolded in the target organizations.
